OUR MISSION
Family Promise prevents and ends homelessness for families with children and helps them achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response.
HOMELESSNESS IS A COMPLEX PROBLEM
Housing alone won’t solve family homelessness. It’s a crisis that requires an integrated approach that addresses all the issues that can lead to the loss of a home.
Every year in America, 2.5. million children experience homelessness. These children are at a much greater risk for academic failure and mental health crises. They are also more likely to experience homelessness in adulthood.
WHAT WE DO
We provide emergency and temporary housing, meals, and services to children and families in need. We mentor families at-risk of experiencing homelessness. We teach financial literacy. We help find jobs and affordable housing. We create programs to meet specific needs in our community. And we advocate for public policies that alleviate poverty and promote the economic stability of low-income families.

PREVENTION & DIVERSION
In some cases, Family Promise can prevent a family from needing emergency shelter by providing services that help them find another housing solution. Keeping families out of shelter is good public policy and good fiscal policy. We provide alternatives to shelter, including:
-
Case management and community support
-
Rental assistance, security deposits
-
Utility support
-
Landlord mediation
-
Housing location
-
Transportation – gas cards, bus passes, and car donations
When families have lost housing and reach out to Family Promise, we provide alternatives to shelter, including:
-
Temporary hotel/motel stays
-
Payments for rent in arrears, security deposits
-
Landlord mediation and housing location
-
Creative solutions leveraging a family’s strengths
Preventing homelessness for children at imminent risk can help reduce the trauma they might experience. Youth who experience homelessness are 20% less likely to graduate high school than their peers. Diversion programming helps families come up with creative solutions that allow families to stay in housing, with family members, or in a temporary living situation until permanent housing can be secured.
SHELTER
Family Promise’s emergency shelter program provides temporary accommodations to families experiencing homelessness and enables them to stay together as they work to regain independence. Utilizing existing community resources, we provide shelter, meals, intensive case management, and comprehensive support services. Our shelter model includes three homes that the families rotate through as they achieve different milestones. During their 6–9 month stay across our 3 homes, families receive intensive, individualized case management, along with food and comfort support from local supporters and faith partners. They also build essential life and resident skills, including how to care for and maintain a home. This housing model creates stability for children, allowing them to stay in school, access reliable transportation, and maintain a sense of normalcy.
